Young dived into a challenge on Diaz when already on a yellow card, having previously tripped the winger, and was shown a second yellow card. The booking came after Young had heroically denied the forward with a brilliant block in the penalty area, but he went from hero to zero at Anfield.

Everton subsequently went into half-time with 10 men, and it is another example of the Merseyside derby throwing up flashpoints. In total, there have been 29 red cards in clashes between Liverpool and Everton, eight of which have been given to the Toffees.
